- FDNA’s Face2Gene uses next-generation phenotyping to analyze facial data for genomic insights that can be used to diagnose potential genetic disorders
- eConsult service boosts access to GGC’s expertise for patients and families across South Carolina
GREENWOOD, S.C., Sept. 18, 2024 – If a clinician suspects a child may have a genetic disorder but doesn’t know where to begin, the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) in collaboration with Face2Gene, can provide support through an eConsult.
Face2Gene is an artificial intelligence-assisted, web-based clinical tool developed by FDNA that supports the diagnosis of genetic disorders based on facial analysis. Facial recognition technology examines facial features and compares them with specific genetic conditions.
The app allows clinicians to upload photos and provide additional clinical information that will be routed to GGC’s clinical team. Within two business days, the clinician will receive a reply indicating which, if any, genetic tests are suggested or whether a full genetics appointment is warranted.
“By starting with an eConsult, we are able to provide timely information allowing the primary clinician to initiate the right genetic testing immediately, removing diagnostic delays and ultimately leading to improved management,” said Mike Lyons, MD, GGC’s Curry Chair in Translational Genomics and Therapeutics. “We can also determine when a genetics consult would be unnecessary, saving both time and resources for the patient and their family.”
Face2Gene is particularly useful for diagnosing rare disorders, where specific facial features can be crucial diagnostic clues. Through Face2Gene, clinicians will receive timely advice and “next step” solutions to their questions at no charge.
“At FDNA, we are committed to improving the patient experience and empowering clinicians with the tools they need to make faster and more accurate diagnoses,” said Erik A. Feingold, FDNA’s CEO and Co-Founder. “By integrating Face2Gene into clinical workflows, we can improve outcomes for children with suspected genetic disorders. Our collaboration with GGC allows us to provide invaluable support, ensuring that patients receive the right care, at the right time.”
Face2Gene’s platform allows clinicians to upload clinical information, messages, and photos through a HIPAA-compliant portal.
To use Face2Gene, clinicians can:
- Download the Face2Gene mobile app
- Register for a free account
- Upload patient photo(s) and clinical information
- Click the GGC eConsult button
- Ask specific questions and receive expert advice within two business days
